The Memorial Process

A Thoughtful, Step-by-Step Journey

We understand that arranging a memorial can feel overwhelming, especially during a time of grief. Our experienced team is here to guide you with care and sensitivity at every stage — from your first enquiry through to the day the memorial is placed.

Below is a clear overview of what to expect. Every family's needs are different, so please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions along the way.

01

Ground Settlement

Most Local Authority cemeteries require a period of ground settlement before a memorial can be installed — typically between six months and one year from the time of burial. This allows the ground to stabilise safely beneath the memorial.

We generally recommend waiting through at least one winter season. If you're unsure about the requirements at a specific cemetery, we're happy to check on your behalf.

Good to know: Churchyards may have different rules to Local Authority cemeteries. We can advise on the specific requirements for your chosen location.
02

Choosing the Stone Type & Shape

We offer a wide range of natural stones and granites in various colours, finishes and shapes — from traditional headstones to full kerbed memorials, book memorials and custom designs.

Our team will guide you through the options available, taking into account any regulations at the cemetery or churchyard, as well as your personal preferences and budget. You can also browse our Timeless Collection brochure for inspiration.

03

Choosing the Inscription & Design

The inscription is one of the most personal elements of a memorial. We'll help you think through the wording, lettering style, layout and any decorative motifs or portraits you'd like to include.

Local Authority cemeteries generally allow a broad range of designs and wording. Churchyards tend to impose stricter guidelines — we will always check the applicable rules before finalising your design.

Hand-etched portraits: Our team can create beautifully detailed hand-etched or laser-engraved portraits from a photograph, as a lasting tribute to your loved one.
04

Quotation & Costs

Once we have a clear picture of the stone type, size and inscription, we will provide you with a detailed, no-obligation quotation. Every memorial is priced individually — costs vary depending on the materials chosen, the complexity of the design and the amount of inscription work involved.

We believe in transparent pricing. If you have a particular budget in mind, please let us know and we will do our best to find the right solution for you.

05

Paying a Deposit

Once you are happy to proceed, we ask for a deposit to confirm your order. This allows us to begin the production process and submit any necessary permit applications on your behalf.

06

Design Approval

We will create a design for your review — showing the layout of the inscription, any artwork, and the overall appearance of the memorial. You are welcome to request changes until you are completely satisfied. Nothing goes to production without your written approval.

07

Applying for a Permit

Once the design has been approved and the deposit paid, we submit the permit application to the relevant Local Authority or Church authority on your behalf. We handle all the paperwork and fees involved.

Permit timescales vary — we will keep you updated throughout and let you know as soon as approval is received.

08

Stone Delivery

Granite memorials are imported and typically take between 12 and 16 weeks to be delivered to us — most arrive within 12 weeks. We do hold a selection of stock stones which can be turned around more quickly if needed.

We will contact you as soon as your memorial arrives and confirm an installation date.

Lead times: If you are working towards a specific date — such as an anniversary — please let us know at the earliest opportunity so we can plan accordingly.
09

Installation

All installation work is carried out by our BRAMM-accredited (British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons) masons, in full compliance with the National Association of Memorial Masons standards. This ensures your memorial is fitted safely and securely.

10

Completion

The final balance is due before the memorial is fixed in place. Once installed, we will contact you to confirm everything is complete. We are always happy to revisit after installation if you have any concerns.

After installation: We offer ongoing maintenance, cleaning and restoration services should you wish to keep the memorial looking its best in the years ahead.
